A ground breaking study, soon to be published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (August 2005) shows how Evening Primrose Oil can reverse the effects of skin ageing – providing a more youthful and healthy appearance in just three months.

The study, undertaken by Derma Consult GmbH, a leading independent dermatology research group in Germany, found that volunteers showed improvements of between 10-20% in skin moisture and moisture loss, smoothness, elasticity, firmness and fatigue after supplementing their diet with six 500mg capsules of Efamol Evening Primrose Oil a day.

The double blind, placebo controlled clinical study of 40 subjects, both men and women average age 44, showed that all those taking Efamol Evening Primrose Oil benefited from the supplementation.

Evening primrose oil contains high levels of the Omega-6 fatty acid, gamma- linolenic acid (GLA). GLA plays an active role in the normal structure of every single cell membrane in the body and is an essential element for skin structure. It converts in the body to substances called prostaglandins which contribute to a wide variety of body functions including improved blood flow to all tissues and the removal of excess water.

Efamol Evening Primrose Oil is up to 33% more potent than other Evening Primrose Oils because it is extracted from a special variety of seed called Rigel which provides more of the active ingredient needed for skin health.

Peter Clough, managing director at Efamol Ltd. comments: “We have tested Efamol Evening Primrose Oil in a number of skin studies over the past 25 years but generally on people with irritated skin, such as eczema. This study is the first to actually examine the effects of Evening Primrose Oil on healthy skin when taken orally. We suspected that it would have a positive effect but did not think that the results would provide such conclusive scientific evidence.

“The trial found statistically significant improvements on the skin and shows Efamol Evening Primrose Oil can help to reverse the effects of skin ageing. Supplementing the diet could reduce a person’s biological skin age and associated parameters such as elasticity and smoothness significantly. We believe that the study’s findings are so strong that they provide good support for the use of Efamol Evening Primrose oil as an oral cosmetic or ‘cosmoceutical’.”
