Study shows EPO significantly reduces menopausal hot flashes

April 2013

Objective:

To determine if Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) significantly reduces hot flashes and improves associated quality of life factors in menopausal women.

Study 1 Design:

  • Randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled clinical trial
  • 56 menopausal women aged 45-59 years with self-reported history of hot flashes (more than 4 times daily) and no previous treatment for it
  • Took two 500 mg capsules of EPO daily or an equivalent number of placebo capsules for 6 weeks
  • Assessments were completed before and after treatment

NOTE: Hot flashes are a common experience for menopausal women, and for many, are severe enough to significantly compromise their overall sense of well-being and quality of life.

Study Assessments:

1. Hot Flash Daily Reference Scale (HFDRS) - determines impact on specific activities of daily living including:

  • Work (at home and outside)
  • Social activities
  • Mood
  • Concentration
  • Enjoyment of life
  • Relations with others
  • Leisure activities
  • Sleep
  • Sexuality
  • Total quality of life

2. Descriptive characteristics of their hot flashes:

  • Frequency (over a 24 hour period)
  • Severity on a scales of 0 (not at all) to 10 (extremely)
  • Duration in minutes

Conclusion

EPO decreases the intensity of hot flash attacks including frequency, severity and duration and significantly improves social activities, relations with others and sexuality.
